Is the iPhone XS waterproof?

The iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max are water-resistant. This does not mean they are waterproof.

With normal, everyday use, it is likely that you will come into contact with common liquids. Whether it be coffee in the morning, water at lunch, or a beer or wine in the evening, spills can happen. However, a splash of water or coffee is not the same as dropping your phone in a swimming pool. As the iPhone XS is water and splash resistant, you can wipe clean your phone, dry it off, and continue to use it as usual, but it is not advised that you take your XS or XS Max for a dip in the pool!

What Does Apple Say?

Apple states that from the iPhone 7 onwards the latest models are splash and water-resistant. This includes the iPhone XS and XS Max models. According to Apple’s Marketing Chief, Phil Schiller, at the Apple Keynote in 2018, “if you happen to be hanging by the pool, drop your phone in the water... don't worry, dive down, grab it, rinse it, let it dry, you'll be fine”.

Both the iPhone XS and XS Max were the first iPhone models to boast an IP68 rating. This means that these two models should be able to resist being submerged underwater (in freshwater, not saltwater!) to a depth of 2 meters for up to 30 minutes. Obviously, if your iPhone does spend too much time submerged underwater, liquid can still enter the device and potentially cause damage, or worse, failure. Despite this, liquid damage is not covered under the Apple warranty.

Another incredibly popular question is: are AirPods Pro waterproof? We answer that one too!

How To Avoid Liquid Damage

Electronic devices should always be kept well clear of any water. That, however, is more difficult when it comes down to our phones - we love to take them everywhere! So whilst the iPhone XS is water-resistant, you should avoid the following:

  • Using your iPhone in the bath
  • Taking your iPhone into swimming pools
  • Taking your iPhone into the sea
  • Taking your iPhone into steam rooms or saunas
  • Using your iPhone during watersports such as surfing

In the event should you get caught out in the rain, drop it in the loo or spill a drink over your XS, it should be okay. Dry it off, give it a clean, and it should function like normal. About Mous

The Mous story began with dropping phones from 45ft cranes and out of helicopters. What we discovered was that slim cases were not really that effective at protecting your phone and those deemed protective phone cases were chunky and a bit of an eyesore. So we made it our mission to create phone cases that were both extremely protective yet beautifully crafted. Relentless testing on leading phones and thousands of prototypes later, a crowd-funding campaign turned our dream into reality - Mous was born. Today, our collection features all the modern-day phone cases and accessories you will need such as AirPods cases, charging cables, phone mounts, and so much more.
